How to Reset Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

If you are unable to sign in to your Astute account due to a lost phone, a changed number, or forgotten security questions, don't worry — access can be restored.

This guide will walk you through the process of resetting your MFA settings using a Temporary Access Pass (TAP).

If your usual method is no longer accessible, a Temporary Access Pass can provide you with a one-time opportunity to log in and set up new authentication options.

Steps to Reset MFA

📞 Step 1: Contact the HR Team

To get started, you will need to reach out to a member of the HR team.

Please inform them that:

  • You are currently locked out of your Astute account
  • You no longer have access to your registered MFA method (such as a phone or app)
  • You need a Temporary Access Pass to reset your security settings

The HR Team will not be able to generate the TAP themselves, but they will confirm your identity and submit the request on your behalf to the IT Service Desk.

Once your identity has been verified, a request will be submitted to the IT team to issue your Temporary Access Pass.

📩 Step 3: Receive the Temporary Access Pass

When the IT team issues your TAP, it will be sent to you via one of the following methods:

  • Email
  • SMS

If you do not receive the TAP within a reasonable timeframe (usually within 10–20 minutes), please follow up with HR to ensure the request was processed correctly.

🖥️ Step 4: Use the TAP to Access Your Account

Once you receive your TAP, you must use it as soon as possible. This pass is time-sensitive and comes with important limitations.

🔗 Go to: https://aka.ms/mysignins

  • Enter your Astute Email Address
  • When prompted for MFA, select the option to Use a Temporary Access Pass
  • Enter the TAP exactly as it was provided to you
  • Once signed in, immediately update your authentication methods

You should:

  • Set up the Microsoft Authenticator app (recommended)
  • Add a new mobile phone number for SMS backup
  • Ensure you know the answers to your security questions

⚠️ Important:

  • The TAP is valid for 1 hour only from the time it is issued
  • It can only be used once
  • The only purpose of this login should be to update your authentication methods

Failure to do so may result in your account remaining inaccessible, and you'll need to request another TAP.

🕒 What If You Miss the Window?

If for any reason your TAP expires before you've had a chance to update your authentication settings, or if the login attempt fails, you'll need to repeat the process:

  • Contact the HR team again
  • Request that a new Temporary Access Pass be issued
  • Follow the same steps to complete your MFA reset

Each TAP is unique, has a one-hour expiration, and becomes invalid after it is used — even if the authentication update wasn't completed.
